EXECUTIVES DEBATE THE FUTURE OF WEBCASTING AT FIRST-EVER LAWNMOWER EAST COAST EVENT

BackWeb, Microsoft, Pointcast and Wayfarer to

Participate in Roundtable

New York, May 29 - The future of Webcasting is the topic as LawNMoweR, the Los Angeles-based new media roundtable, hosts its first-ever East Coast event at Manhattan's Roxy tonight.

The event features executives from BackWeb Technologies, Microsoft Corp., Pointcast and Wayfarer Communications who will debate the merits of and prospects for Webcasting and "Push" technology and their impact on the Internet.

Webcasting has evolved as a major new Internet model. In the Web's earlier days, active browsing was the sole method of retrieving information. Push has added convenience and provided users the ability to have information delivered automatically to the desktop. But convenience may come at the cost of the interactivity that some say is central to the Internet experience. The two divergent Internet models will form the center of tonight's debate. The panel will address questions such as:

  • € Will Push technology change the interactive nature of the Internet experience? If so how?

  • € Which standard for Webcasting will Internet content providers adopt?

  • € Will Push technology employ agents or filtering to enable consumers to be selective and avoid information overload?

"The issues surrounding Webcasting have been a heated topic for some time now, and LawNMoweR provides the forum to stage this continuing debate," explained Jim Jonassen, founder of LawNMoweR.

Participants in the LawNMoweR Talkshow includes Jonassen, who will host expert panelists Kelsey Selander, Vice President, Backweb; Howard Greenstein, Technical Evangelist, Microsoft Corp.; Tom Mannion, Director of Advertising Sales, Pointcast; and John Laing, CEO, Wayfarer Communications.

"The Push technology category has rapidly evolved into consumer and business segments," said John Laing, CEO of Wayfarer Communications. "Wayfarer is exclusively focused on 'smart' Push solutions for business and we look forward to the LawNMoweR roundtable as a forum for discussing the issues corporations face in effectively implementing Webcasting solutions."

Immediately following the panel, LawNMoweR will host a Showcase and cocktail reception featuring twenty of the most prominent companies from the country's hotbeds of interactivity -- from New York's Silicon Alley to L.A.'s Digital Epicenter. Participants in the showcase include: Dot Comm Development, E-Drive, Mercury Seven, Art Tech Group, The Palace, Digital Planet, Box Top, BackWeb, Exodus, Wayfarer, and ZD Net.

LawNMoweR produced the event in partnership with the New York New Media Association, Women in New Media and the MIT Enterprise Forum of New York City, Inc. and with co-sponsors ZDNet and Coopers & Lybrand.

Registration will begin at the door starting at 6:00 p.m. tonight for $20.00. Information about this and future LawNMoweR events is available via the web site at: www.lawnmoweronline.com or via e-mail at: lawnmower@larkin.com.
